For Phil Candler, Maritimo’s Operations Manager, craftsmanship is not a single department or a single skill. It is a philosophy that influences every aspect of yacht building.
“In every single area of the business we’re asking the question: how do we do it better, differently, improve? That simple question drives the way Maritimo approaches design, manufacturing and product development. It’s why craftsmanship is never considered finished. It is continually refined through experience, technology, customer feedback and the knowledge of the people who build each Maritimo yacht,” Candler stated.
So, at its heart, craftsmanship starts with people. To that end Maritimo’s apprenticeship programme continues to provide a pathway for the next generation of skilled boatbuilders, creating opportunities for young tradespeople to develop their abilities and progress through the business.
For Candler, the goal is not simply to teach a trade, but to develop future leaders who understand every part of the yacht-building process. The pathway sets apprentices on a course to complete their apprenticeship with Maritimo to then progress through the business, to supervise production teams, and ultimately with the potential to move into production management roles in the future.
“That’s the evolution of training,” Candler explains. “Developing people, delivering courses internally and externally, and upskilling young boatbuilders to become managers.”
Candler raised a current example demonstrating the evolving nature of craftsmanship in a modern boatbuilding environment. “We had a young boatbuilder complete his apprenticeship before further broadening his experience in the industry and going on to study naval architecture. When he returns to Maritimo it will be as a qualified naval architect, bringing together practical boatbuilding knowledge with advanced design and engineering skills. That combination of hands-on experience and technical expertise represents the future of craftsmanship,” said Candler.
While the human element remains fundamental, modern technology is providing new opportunities to refine and enhance traditional skills. Maritimo is investing in advanced 2D and 3D design capabilities, digital scanning technology and five-axis machining to improve accuracy throughout the design and manufacturing process.
Candler is clear on the role of technology in the whole process, “It’s not about replacing craftsmanship. It’s about enhancing it,” he added.
Through 3D modelling, scanning and precision machining, Maritimo is achieving finer finishes and tighter tolerances, with accuracy measured down to millimetres and even half-millimetres.
“The technology creates greater consistency, but it is still the experience and knowledge of the team that determines the outcome. It’s still a huge amount of team effort to enhance it, to make sure that works and to develop people in all those areas,” Candler said.

Customer feedback has become an important part of refining future models, with conversations at boat shows, factory visits, 3D presentations and ownership experiences all contributing valuable insights.
“The learning is big. The learning is constant,” Candler said. “Often, owners provide feedback without even realising how valuable it is. They’ll mention, ‘That was a great feature on this,’ or ‘This is a great feature on that.’ ”

Before any yacht reaches an owner, it undergoes extensive quality checks, independent reviews, and weeks of testing on the water. Running a yacht repeatedly before delivery is not seen as a negative. It is simply another opportunity to refine the product.
“We’re running, rerunning, running, rerunning,” Candler said. “Picking systems above and beyond all quality checks, and then going back to compliance factors as well.”
